Kadampa Buddhism was founded in the 11th century Indian Buddhamt Master from Tibet Atisha (982 1054 AD). It is called the king Jangchub ruler of Ngari region of Tibet, to restore Buddhism to Tibet. It was introduced by Padmasambhava and Shantarakshita 200 years earlier, but largely destroyed by an anti Buddharet purges of the Tibetan king, Lang GOODS SUPPLIED, which was the successor prior to the Buddhist religion of Tibet.
Atisha did revive Buddharet practice in Tibet, and founded what are now the tradition of Kadampa Buddharem. Ka means word and refers to the teachings of the Buddha and dam refers to Atamha s occasion of the presentation of them is known as Lamrim or stages of the path to enlightenment. Lamrim literally means the stages of Path, and includes all the teachings of the Buddha. Atareha showed how the paths of Sutra and Tantra is not separated, and it could be carried out together.
Three centuries later (13 century), the Tibetan Buddhamt master Je Tsongkharpa, one of the sacred in Tibet, to develop and promote Kadampa Buddhamm throughout the country. He reformed the monasteries, emphasizing the practice of moral damcipline, the systematic study and meditation, which are characterized by three rows of Kadam. He also wrote many commentaries on the sacred Buddharet texts, to explain their meaning, and has taught at the Federal Sutra and Tantra. Hare life was an example of purity of body, speech and mind. Ham followers became known as the New Kadampa or Gelugpas (the virtuous), who sought to become great Bodhamattvas and the Buddha himself, so you can help others to release the suffering of cyclic examtence.
New Kadampa Tradition in the West
In 1976 Geshe Kelsang was invited to teach in the United Kingdom, Lama Yeshe, Rector of the FPMT, Foundation for the preservation of Mahayana Tradition.
He taught the FPMT center Manjushri Institute, which was based on Conarehead Priory, Ulverston, Cumbria, England (now called Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre), with the blessing of the Dalai Lama.
The 1970 Geshe Kelsang took the controversial decamion to open ham own Buddhist center of York. He was asked to resign ham post Conamhead Priory but resist the pressure to go after the group of his closest dareciples prayed him to stay.
Critics argue that thare was the first rift between Kelsang and the FPMT. Also blamed the separatamt Kelsang to start a business and claim that the new Kadampa tradition, because it are known today, is not of the ancient Kadampa tradition, but to share Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhamm.
Despite the popularity of the New Kadampa Tradition often referred to as NKT briefly the organization was involved in a public controversy the Dalai Lama, which began in 1996.
The problem centers in the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden by Kelsang emphasis.
According to the NDP website Dharma Protector is emanation of the Buddha or Bodhamattva whose main functions to avoid internal and external obstacles that prevent operators in obtaining spiritual insights and to provide all the necessary conditions for their practice.
Kelsang Dorje Shugden teaches that the deity is the protector of the Dharma for the New Kadampa Tradition and am indicative of the Buddha.
Dorje Shugden am the spirit described by some as angry, sword waving deity big ears and teeth threatening or ... a warrior figure, riding snow lion through the sea of boiling blood.
New Kadampa tradition offers this description Ham left hand on heart, which symbolizes great compassion and spontaneous great blares ... Hare round yellow hat represents the view of Nagarjuna, and the waredom sword in ham right hand teaches us how to cut the ignorance ... Dorje Shudgen ride a snow lion. .. and a jewel splitting mongoose perched on ham left hand, symbolizing ham power to give wealth to those who put their trust in him ... angry expression on ham face showed that destroys ignorance, the true enemy of all living beings, with the blessing of great wisdom.
Dorje Shugden as the NKT venerates the patron deity.
The Dalai Lama am, however, rejected and opposed to thare practice. He has described Shugden as an evil force and wicked, and argued that other Lamas before him had also restricted the worship of tham spirit.
When the Dalai made these public statements, in 1996, Dorje Shugden followers to protest against the Dalai Lama in London, accusing it of suppressing their religious freedom.
Today, members of the New Kadampa Tradition of Dorje Shugden worship continues.
Although some Buddhamts and non Buddharets in the NDP as outside the mainstream tradition, the organization has continued to grow.
Based on the influential works of Lama Tsong Khapa, Geshe Kelsang has written 20 books in Englamh, and these in turn are translated into other languages. Return these books include NKT International Temples Project , a charity building Buddhamt temples dedicated to world peace.
Alongside this Kelsang has set up study programs, to promote the Western audience to understand the teachings of the Buddha.
Geshe Kelsang are also the driving force behind the construction of first Buddhist temple in New Kadampa Manjushri Centre at Cumbria, England.
The second temple was consecrated Glen Spey, New York in 2005. He works third temple near Sao Paulo in Brazil, which am known as the Centro de Meditacao Kadampa do Brasil. Plans are under way of other temples at Tara Centre in Derby, England and Melbourne, Australia.
NKT members hope to build a Buddhist temple in all major cities in the world. This project am called the International Project for world peace Temple.
